This page explains how the guides on this site are written, checked and kept up to date, and how the site is paid for.
Who writes the guides
Every guide is written by Ben Johnson, who has over 25 years’ experience in healthcare as a registered nurse, including more than a decade in gastroenterology and 10 years as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner and Independent Prescriber. He holds an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. Where a guide covers an area outside his day-to-day practice, such as detailed dietary therapy, it is checked by an appropriately qualified professional, who is named on the guide.
Our sources
Guides are based on current UK guidance first: the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and the NHS. Where guidance doesn’t cover a question, we use peer-reviewed research, preferring systematic reviews and large trials. Every guide lists its references.
Review dates
Each guide shows when it was last reviewed and when it is next due, normally 12 months later. If guidance changes before then, we update the guide sooner and change the review date.
What we won’t do
- Let advertisers, sponsors or partners change our clinical advice
- Recommend a product unless we’d suggest it anyway, based on the evidence
- Give personal medical advice, or diagnose anyone through the site
- Share patient stories that could identify anyone
How the site is paid for
The site is paid for by its own workbooks, advertising shown by Google on some pages, and occasionally by affiliate links and sponsored content. Ads are clearly labelled and are never placed inside medical warnings.
- Affiliate links: if we link to a product and earn a small commission when you buy it, we say so next to the link. It never costs you more.
- Sponsored content: anything a company has paid for is labelled “Sponsored” at the top, and still follows this policy. Sponsors don’t see or approve the clinical content.
- Products we mention: we only recommend products where the evidence supports them, and we say when the evidence is weak.
Ben declares any financial relationship with a company whose products are discussed on this site.
Use of AI tools
We use AI writing tools to help with research, drafting and editing. Every guide is checked, corrected and approved by Ben before it is published, and all clinical statements are checked against the referenced sources.
